Staff pick: Manuka Honey

In today’s society people tend to equate honey with a delicious gooey Greek pastry and the more common use of sweetening a cup of your favorite tea. The true value of honey has been forgotten. It was once regaled as the nectar of the GODS and was used used in beauty regimes since the time of Cleopatra. She regularly took honey and milk baths to maintain her youthful appearance. The vitamins, minerals and amino acids found in honey make it a wonderful beauty aid and excellent moisturizing agent. It increases exfoliation and renewal of the skin cells that makes the skin softer and younger.

What is so special about Manuka honey? It has antibacterial properties that are far superior to any other type of honey. Bees create this honey from the Manuka bush, a shrub in New Zealand that is of the tea tree family, and which only blooms for three weeks in the entire year. Most of you are familiar with the incredible healing powers of tea tree, and the honey from this shrub is no exception. It can be taken internally, or even applied externally to wounds, bites, infections and cuts.

I can honestly say that myself and a few willing friends have put this honey to the test and have noticed great results. It has been used on skin suffering from regular acne, cystic acne, cold sores and dry skin also on a cut on my puppy’s lip. (Please don’t contact PETA; we got her vet’s permission first!) All results were more satisfactory then any over the counter pharmacy ointments and antibiotic creams that are very well known.
